Spectacular 777 landings @ BHX

Published on Dec 26, 2012 by
Any 777 landing is impressive, but these are a bit special.

The last shot is the preceding one with the engines enlarged to highlight the vortices which spin up and over the wing from the little engine fins (strakes) at big wing tilts.

777 loud wake turbulence 'howl'

by flugsnug yo
Published on 9 Dec 2012
In the first of these two Emirates 777 landings, the weird 'howl' (can't think of a good word to describe it) from the wake turbulence peaks at around 50 seconds in the video - about 34 seconds after the plane has gone by. My experience is that 777's don't usually make much wake noise, but this is probably the loudest I have ever heard from any plane.

In the second landing, the wake is much less audible but its turbulence is very visible.

This Russian 747 had diverted to Birmingham because of fog at Bruntingthorpe where it was headed to be scrapped. It left BHX Monday 3rd December 2012 on its final short hop - there is a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-wEDG623QE of its arrival a few minutes later at Bruntingthorpe.

Had to smile a bit at the convoy of vehicles which scoured the BHX runway immediately after departure.

Crosswind rock and roll - Keystone Cops version

by flugsnug yo
Published on 31 Oct 2012
A day of 36 knot (41 mph) crosswind gusts makes for some hard landings and twisty take-offs. These shots are speeded up for fun, also to show a few things which are less noticeable at normal speed. Place: runway 33 at BHX, where the airport buildings reportedly can cause wind shear. Just to make things even more fun for the pilots, the ILS wasn't working so the non-directional beacon was used on approach.

Please don't think this video pokes fun at anyone - these guys do a brilliant job getting these things down whatever's thrown at them.

See videohttp://youtu.be/MIK1iObZxis for the normal speed version of selected shots.

757 heavy bounced landing

by flugsnug yo
Published on 7 Oct 2012
The second shot is the hardest landing that I have witnessed. The first shot is a more typical bounce, also by a Boeing 757, which is included for comparison purposes. In neither case did the spoilers deploy on first ground contact to counteract the bounce.
In the big bounce, initial contact was with the upslope of the bump in runway 33 at BHX, which may have been at least partly responsible for the size of the bounce (the planned southerly extension of the runway should move this bump beyond the main touchdown zone in future).
There was a 90-degree crosswind for both landings.

Ten landings at BHX on 16th August 2012

by flugsnug yo
Published on 19 Aug 2012
These are all ten landings on runway 15 in a 20-minute period at BHX. The gusty 16 knot crosswind from the right was similar to the one which created some difficulties for pilots in video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN27CUrdow4. In at least a couple of the landings here extra thrust had to be applied on the approach because of sudden speed drops due to the wind conditions - listen how the pilot whacks on the power from about 1 minute 20 seconds in the fourth landing (Monarch A320).

The planes in order are: Airbus A321, Boeing 757, A321, A320, AT-72, A321, Boeing 737, A320, Boeing 777, 752.

As smooth and unfussy a landing as you could see in bad weather, as the huge Emirates 777 eases into Birmingham in heavy rain - a six hour flight from Dubai and total contrast in conditions made to look like child's play. Aborted landing/missed approach at Birmingham Airport (BHX)

by flugsnug yo
Published on 23 May 2012
On the left side of the video is the missed approach to runway 33, on the right side is the successful landing about 12 minutes later. The plane is the same distance from the camera in the two views. Following this is the aborted landing with exaggerated contrast to show exactly when the engines are throttled up. I don't know why the landing was aborted, but there was a gusty north-easterly crosswind that day and the plane clearly rocks a bit. The plane also looks to be quite a bit higher on the aborted landing. Anyway, from the moment thrust was re-applied everything went perfectly.

I beleive this aircraft is reasonably rare at Birmingham, I know AF fly there frequently but I dont remember them using this Aircraft. Maybe any local BHX spotters could drop a comment with some info....:)

Birmingham Airport (BHX) runway ski-jump

by flugsnug
Published on 5 May 2012
The runway at Birmingham Airport (BHX) can be a thing of beauty when seen from some angles - more like a sculpture than a piece of civil engineering. One effect of its sensuous curves is the accidental provision of something resembling the ski-jumps used on aircraft carriers by Harrier jump jets and the like to help push the planes into the sky. Smaller jet airliners, at any rate, seem to time their takeoff perfectly on runway 15 to benefit from this, as shown in the video. It would be great to hear from any pilots whether this actually is intentional.
