BHX runway extension + Monarch hangar movements - end 2013
This is the Birmingham Airport runway extension as it looks from the south and the east at the end of 2013. The western edge of the long-stay car park offers great views of the extension and new taxiways, which are due for completion in Spring 2014.

The MAEL (Monarch) maintenance hangar has been busy since opening a few weeks ago, and some of its visitors are shown here (most being towed around the airfield). Two to note are RAF Voyager (Airbus A330) ZZ333, and Monarch A300 G-MONS having its last engine run before flying to the US for scrapping.

Strong Crosswinds at Birmingham Airport, BHX | 27/12/13

On Friday 27th December 2013, busy flights taking people home & away for Christmas and New Year were greeted in Britain with torrential rain and storm force westerly winds rolling across the country, with gusts of over 70mph! So I thought I'd head down to BHX to see how they coped in the extreme conditions.

INCLUDES: Emirates 777, Thomson (FCA) 767 & 757, Thomas Cook 757, Turkmenistan 757, Ryanair 737's, KLM 737, Flybe Embraer 195's, 175's & Dash8's, BMI Regional Embraer 145 and more!

Some very difficult approaches onto RWY15 and some pretty rough touch downs but very impressive skills displayed by all flight crews in this video!

Two New Long Haul Routes Announced From Birmingham Airport by Biman Bangladesh

19 December 2013

Two New Long Haul Routes Announced From Birmingham Airport by Biman Bangladesh
Birmingham Airport will commence twice weekly scheduled flights to both New York and Dhaka in the spring of 2014; a long-haul operation made possible thanks to Birmingham’s £40m runway extension soon to open.

Birmingham will become only the third UK airport to have direct flights to New York JFK and offer the only non-stop service between the UK and Bangladesh outside of London.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines, Bangladesh’s National Flag carrier, will operate between Dhaka, Birmingham and New York’s John F. Kennedy airport using a Boeing 777 aircraft, offering Business and Economy seating.

Paul Kehoe, Birmingham Airport’s Chief Executive, said, “The Midlands is a diverse region that offers enormous trade and cultural opportunities to carriers looking to widen links outside of the south east, and this is exactly the type of operation that our longer runway has been built to cater for.

“With a growing number of long-haul flights launching from Birmingham, we’re clearly demonstrating the desire by airlines to operate to and from the Midlands and take advantage of our strong catchment, excellent location and transport links, and world class facilities, all available thanks to our major investment programme.”

The Midlands has the UK’s second largest Bangladeshi community outside of London, home to more than 50,000 people from Bangladeshi origin. The New York JFK sector is expected to be particularly popular with Midlanders wanting to reach the city for business and leisure purposes and will complement Birmingham Airport’s current daily scheduled flight to New York Newark Airport.

Kevin Steele, MD & CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, added, “Birmingham’s strong Bangladeshi community, new transit and terminal facilities and of course its extended runway capability that will allow us to fly direct from Dhaka next year were all key factors that attracted us to this new venture.

“We also recognise the many opportunities to build business and cultural links between Dhaka, Birmingham and New York and see how successful other long-haul routes have been in recent years from Birmingham.

“Customers flying with us can expect world class service, great cuisine, higher than normal free baggage allowance and excellent value-for-money fares, and we look forward to launching this important new route in the spring.”

Biman Bangladesh’s main hub is at Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), which is the primary air travel gateway into Bangladesh. The airline provides international passenger and cargo services to Asia and Europe, as well as major domestic routes inside Bangladesh. It has air service agreements with 42 countries and currently flies to 16 different countries.

Birmingham Airport’s 400m runway extension will allow aircraft to fly an extra 2000 nautical miles from Birmingham, to reach destinations in the Far East, South America and the west coast of the US directly.

Flights will be on sale early in the New Year with launch fares starting from GBP100 plus taxes each way between Birmingham and JFK and GBP150 plus taxes each way between Birmingham and Dhaka. Once on sale, tickets can be booked via www.biman-airlines.com

Birmingham Airport allowed 36 Million PPA in Airports Commission Interim...

By E Birmingham

Birmingham Airport allowed 36 Million PPA in Airports Commission Interim report Birmingham Airport Welcomes the Airports Commission's Recognition of its Role in the UK's Long-Term Aviation Strategy

The Davies Commission report has welcomed Birmingham Airport's long-term vision and affirmed the importance of the Airport in the UK's long-term aviation strategy.

The Davies Commission made key points that will support the future growth of the Airport:-
• Potential building for a second-runway as a long-term option.
• Rejection of a dominant hub-airport model as the only answer for Britain's aviation needs.
• Making the most of Birmingham's capacity in the medium-term.
• The impact of HS2 on the airport's future development.

Commenting on the report Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport, said: "Our hard work has paid off. Birmingham Airport has today been recognised as an integral piece of the long-term aviation puzzle, supporting the growth of aviation links across the UK, which is a positive step forward for the Midlands economy.

"And whatever the long-term solution, the Commission has also recognised that Birmingham Airport can grow immediately and we will work with the Government on the policy recommendations set out in this report in order to deliver this.

"We will continue to work alongside our stakeholders to ensure Birmingham Airport delivers for local businesses, passengers and the economy."

However, concerns remain that the report does not address the whole British economy.
"Despite the stated remit of the Commission to take a "UK wide perspective", the Interim Report focuses disproportionately on the South East further entrenching the dominance of the South East economy to the detriment of the growth of the rest of the UK."

Embraer 145 buffeted landing
My previous two uploads of the stormy crosswind at BHX on 5th December 2013 were of landing heavies struggling with wind shear and turbulence, and it's not surprising smaller planes were affected, like this ERJ-145.

(Starting to feel I'm being a bit sadistic uploading all these crosswind videos so this will be the last one for a while)

777 go around twice in unpredictable crosswind
Despite seeing numerous missed approaches (go arounds) and difficult landings during the storm which hit Birmingham Airport/BHX on Thursday 5th December 2013, it still came as a bit of a shock to see the two by the mighty Emirates Boeing 777 Registration A6-ECY.

In the first go around, the pilot experienced a windshear alarm in the cockpit just before what should have been touchdown, and re-applied full power to take the plane back into the sky. On the video, the way the 200-tonne giant is suddenly pushed to the right by an enormous gust at the crucial moment is obvious.

On the second landing attempt, the continuing turbulent crosswind persuaded the pilot to break off the approach with about a mile still to go. Sometime later he decided to give Birmingham a miss and head for London Gatwick.

Monarch Airlines A300-605R Final Flight

Taken from an e-mail from Monarch Airlines...November 2013
"Dear Enthusiast,

I’m sure you are already very much aware, that Monarch Airlines will be retiring our A300-605R fleet in early 2014. The aircraft came in to service with Monarch in 1990, was our first widebody aircraft, and has served both the airline and the travelling public for well over two decades.

Monarch are the last European passenger operator of Airbus’ first entry in to the commercial airline sector. The aircraft’s retirement in April 2014 will be a sad occasion at Monarch as we wave goodbye to an aircraft that has flown in our colours for longer than most of our crews have. It will also mark a turning point for the company, as we re-fleet and introduce more modern aircraft.

To mark the occasion of the aircraft’s retirement from service, Monarch are considering our options with regards a farewell flight which we would open up to Enthusiasts, with the intention of hosting a VIP reception in Monarch Aircraft Engineering Ltd’s new Birmingham hangar, a milestone achievement for our sister company.

The proposed event would feature a short flight, departing from and arriving back in to Birmingham International Airport (BHX), hopefully with passengers disembarking directly in to the new, three-bay hangar for a farewell celebration.

I must stress that no event is confirmed, and at this stage, I have been tasked simply with gauging the interest of the Enthusiast Community in attending this proposed event. If you would be interested in attending our Birmingham-based event in very late March, or very early April 2014, I would love to hear back from you with an idea on the numbers that you may be attending with. An idea on pricing would follow in due course, if the event is confirmed and we have finalised all of the appropriate arrangements.

I look forward to your responses, and thank you for your patience while we try to get something arranged. If you have friends that may be interested in the event, but may not be on my mailing list, I would appreciate you forwarding this e-mail to them, or sharing the proposal on any aviation forums you may use.

Please can you send all responses toenthusiastdays@monarch.co.uk?"

Hangar opening - Inside the new multi-million pound maintenance hangar at Birmingham Airport.

Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited (MAEL), the award winning independent aircraft maintenance provider and division of The Monarch Group, has announced the official opening by Sir Roy McNulty, Non-Executive Director, Monarch Holdings Limited, of a brand new multi-million pound maintenance hangar at Birmingham Airport.

The facility, which is immediately creating 150 new jobs, also has the potential to add a further 150 posts.

The 110,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility will complement the company’s existing engineering operations at London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester Airports and supports the continuing growth of MAEL’s high quality aircraft engineering activities.

The new facility can accommodate almost every aircraft type in its two bays, incorporates industry-leading design and build standards, and is one of the first to have the capacity for Boeing 787 Dreamliner maintenance, with sufficient capacity for other wide body aircraft, such as the Boeing 777, 747 and Airbus A350. It is large enough to accommodate two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft or 10 narrow-body aircraft and will contain a number of component-repair and back shops. The vast building, covering c2.5 acres is big enough to house four full size football pitches, 2400 Minis or 450 double decker buses.

In its first month of operation, seven different aircraft types are scheduled for maintenance in the facility, including Airbus A300, A320 and A321, Boeing 757 and 767, Embraer 195 and Bombardier Q400.

Today, some 60% of the world’s airline carriers outsource heavy maintenance work, with a global MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) market worth US$49 billion. This is predicted to grow to US$65 billion over the next 10 years (Source: Aerostrategy).

The Birmingham hangar will enable MAEL to service a greater share of the growing market for aircraft maintenance service in the UK and Europe. Its own third-party (i.e. non-Monarch Airlines) maintenance activities have grown to 31% of business in 2013 from 18% in 2010, and over the next two years this is planned to increase to almost 40% of turnover. This will consolidate MAEL’s position in the top 10 largest airframe MRO organisations in Europe.

The new facility will ensure the continued growth of MAEL’s highly regarded apprenticeship scheme, now in its 42nd year. More than 700 apprentices have been through the scheme since its inception. Not only does the scheme help create jobs in the local community, it also provides an essential pipeline of skilled aircraft engineers for MAEL and the wider industry.

Commenting on the new MRO facility at Birmingham Airport, Mick Adams, Managing Director of MAEL, said: “Today is a real milestone in the growth and development of MAEL as we officially open our tremendous new state-of-the-art engineering hangar at Birmingham Airport. The hard work and dedication of the whole team involved in this project has been outstanding and has allowed us to ensure it has opened on time and most importantly, within budget.

“Our own people, the contractors John Sisk & Son Ltd, RPS Group plc and Birmingham Airport have all formed part of the large team involved in this project over the last year and I would like to thank them for their unending commitment. The hangar, together with our existing facilities at London Luton and Manchester further secures our ability to provide both existing and new customers, with a first class maintenance, repair and overhaul service.

Iain Rawlinson, Executive Chairman of The Monarch Group, who attends the opening of the facility today, said: “We are very proud to be opening this innovative new facility, just one year after we announced its creation. It has been a huge achievement. This multi-million pound investment at Birmingham Airport, a key and growing part of The Monarch Group’s operation, clearly demonstrates our commitment to the region and is not only generating jobs, but will also attract more international and domestic customers, benefitting both the region and the UK economy as a whole.”

Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport said: “Today’s opening is a major development for Monarch Aircraft Engineering, Birmingham Airport and the Midlands region as a whole. Opening this state-of-the-art facility in Birmingham underpins Monarch’s long-term commitment to the region, creating job opportunities for skilled engineers and young people looking to start a career in aircraft maintenance. We look forward to welcoming the arrival of new aircraft and airlines flying into Birmingham specifically to benefit from this world class facility.”

Monarch A321 display flight for new hangar To mark the official opening of the new MAEL aircraft maintenance hangar at BHX on 26th November 2013, A321 G-MARA flew low past the hangar keeping well to the left of the runway - quite a thrill to see an airliner flying low over the airfield NOT over the runway. The flight began at noon with a short takeoff run, followed by a very steep climb into the clouds. There were several passes over the airfield just above the cloud base (not shown in this video, obviously), before the low run past the hangar just before 12-30. A normal approach to runway 33 then followed, with a perfect landing to end the display.

Biman DC-10-30 Final Flight to Birmingham

Biman DC-10-30 Final Flight 11 November 2013

There has been a lot of interest lately from press, aviation enthusiasts and the general public, on what will be happening with Biman’s last DC10s, which will be phased out in the coming months with the arrival of new aircraft. These are the last flying passenger DC10-30 aircraft in the whole world. So I thought I would take this opportunity to brief you with the latest news, which will be updated when further firm news becomes available.

Biman currently has 2 DC10-30s flying. As their fuel consumption is higher than other aircraft in our fleet, they are used sparingly. One of those DC10s will come to the end of its economic life on 10th November 2013 (today), and will be scrapped locally. The last DC10 will continue normal flying until 7th December 2013, the start of the revised schedule for the fog period here in Dhaka. Thereafter, it will only be used as a standby aircraft, in case another aircraft in our fleet become unserviceable for any reason. We will not be scheduling it on any route though.

This last DC10 will continue as a standby aircraft until sometime in February 2014. The exact date is not known yet, as it is being coordinated with the arrival of our brand new B777-300ER aircraft from Boeing. We expect to know the exact date in early January 2014.

The last DC10 is being donated to a museum in the USA, a fitting end for an aircraft that has served Biman loyally and well over many year. Accordingly, we will then offer for sale, as a last opportunity to travel on a passenger DC10, anywhere in the world: a. Seats on a last flight Dhaka to Birmingham (UK). Note this will need a technical stop somewhere. b. 2 (or more if demand requires it) one hour ‘scenic tours’ to/from Birmingham c. We are unsure if the US authorities will give us traffic rights on the Birmingham to USA sector. If they do, this will also be offered for sale. d. We are also discussing with the UK POost Office, about the carriage of ‘Last day Covers’ on the last sector Birmingham-USA, for sale at a later date.

Tickets will only be sold via our website, hopefully from early January, so do not buy tickets elsewhere, we want these tickets to go to genuine aviation enthusiasts. If there is a demand for more ‘scenic tour’ flights at Birmingham, we can consider these too.

We hope you will join with us in celebrating the farewell of a loyal, beautiful aircraft, but also to recognize that the time has now come for Biman to equip itself with the very latest in new aircraft and technology.

A grey, wet morning at Birmingham Airport on Saturday 9th November 2013.
The Thomson (FCA) 767 featured in this video, G-OOBK was actually a substitute aircraft. Another 767, G-OOBL had flown transatlantic over night from Barbados and was then scheduled to operate to Barbados again on this morning. However during its arrival at Birmingham at about 7:35 it declared an emergency for reasons unknown, so the aircraft was then unable to perform the flight to Barbados again. Thats where the 767 featured in this video comes in, it positioned in empty from London Gatwick at about 9:30 and operated the flight to Barbados just under 2 hours late.

INCLUDES: Thomson (FCA) 767-300, Emirates 777, Ryanair 737's, Lufthansa 737, BA Cityflyer ERJ190 (G-LCYR), KLM Cityhopper ERJ190 and KLM 737, Flybe Embraer 170's & Dash8 Q400's, Air France A318, Eurowings CRJ900, BAE-146 (plain white) and a few other business jets!

Also featured a runway swap during this video. During the first half RWY15 was in use, meaning arrivals were straight over my head. However it later changed to RWY33, which sent departures shooting towards me!

New Monarch (MAEL) hangar at Birmingham Airport

Another big event for BHX and the area as Monarch Aircraft Engineering bring their new aircraft maintenance facility into operation. It can handle the Boeing giants 747, 777 and 787, and at any one time can deal with two 777-300 or ten narrow-body planes.

This video shows the hangar construction in snapshot-videos taken every week or two between March and October this year, with some close-ups near the end.

Tribute to the SAS MD-82
A familiar sight at Birmingham Airport, the last of these old jets in SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) service is due to be withdrawn in a few days at the end October 2013, so I've put together some shots taken at BHX/EGBB during 2013 as a video farewell.

The basic design started way back in the 1960's as the Douglas DC-9, moved into the 1980's as the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 family (like the remaining SAS MD-82 examples), and ended with the smaller, quieter Boeing 717 at the very end of the 1990's. So this month really does see the end of an era for SAS and probably for a number of airports served by SAS like Birmingham.

MUST SEE: MONARCH A320 AWFUL LANDING IN STRONG WINDS

MUST SEE: MONARCH A320 AWFUL LANDING IN STRONG WINDS
With Winds of up to speed 17 knots with gusts of 28 knots predicted, we weren't going to let the cold stop us going out and filming!

This was just one of tonnes of amazing crosswind videos I managed to get on the 15th of September 2013 on a trip to Birmingham International Airport. This Monarch A320-214 had a lot of difficulty getting down safely on runway 15 at BHX/EGBB. Firstly, he seemed to misjudge the flare, it appears the pilot overestimated the weight of the aircraft for the speed he was going. He then brings it down, but then appears to hit wind shear and ends up touching down on one wheel. After bouncing back up, he makes the decision to get the Airbus A320 down on the ground instead of a go around. Finally, half way down the runway, and way off centreline, he brings it down. Slamming on the brakes and applying full reverse thrust, he somehow manages to stop well in time and vacate with taxiway C.

This was filmed from Sheldon Country Park on the 15th of September 2013. The aicraft arrived at around 11:30am. I went to Birmingham Airport on a spotting trip with my mate Will, check out his channel here: www.youtube.com/bristolcardifairport

VERY BAD LANDING: Monarch Airbus A320 Strong Crosswind Arrival at Birmingham Airport (BHX-EGBB) *Watch in 1080p!* Competition Sound at the end
This video is of a very bad landing by a Monarch A320-214 at Birmingham Airport during heavy crosswinds. The winds were 230 at 16kt gusting 28kt on the METAR as we left. This aircraft is seen arriving from Dubrovnik in Croatia. Date Filmed: 15th September 2013. Reg: G-OZBW c/n;1571 I filmed this video from the Sheldon Country park at the ned of Runway 15. This could be classed as a bad landing, but really, the pilots did a good job in getting her down safely. But I suspect a few passengers on board wouldn't be too happy! This aircraft was built in 2001 but wasn't delivered to Monarch until 2012 from Thomson Airways. Air India 787-800 Dreamliner @ Birmingham Airport with ATC | Beautiful evening arrival+wing flex
I've been wanting to share this with you ever since I filmed it on the beautiful evening of September the 14th 2013. I absolutely fell in love with this aircraft even more after seeing it so close in such beautiful evening light. Notice the amazing wing flex as the Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner is slowing down on the runway.

Air India began the new service on August 1st which operates four times weekly each Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, arriving from Amritsar and Delhi into Birmingham at 1800 hours and departing to Delhi and Amritsar from Birmingham at 2130 hours.

This 787-8 was arriving from Amristar. The reg was VT-ANH. It arrived on Runway 33 at around 18:30 (UK Summer time). This was filmed from Sheldon Country Park at the end of runway 15 at Birmingham International Airport (BHX/EGBB). This was rerorded during the weekend of 14th/15th of September 2013, on a spotting trip. My mate Will came with my Dad and I. He uploads awesome aviation videos. After a five-year break in services by the Indian national carrier, Air India's flagship 787 Dreamliner landed at Birmingham Airport at 18.00 GMT 1st August 2013. Air India decided to extend Delhi route to Amritsar. The extension of the route to the Punjab city is in response to public demand and was announced earlier than had been anticipated. Kailash Singh, the airline's regional manager UK, Ireland and Europe, revealed it was on the airline's agenda when the new service was announced recently at Birmingham Airport. The announcement of the route extension was made at a civic celebration to mark the re-introduction of the Birmingham to Delhi route, which ceased in 2008.

Birmingham Airport looking 100 years into future with £7bn airport plans
Birmingham Airport will tell the government today that it could build a second runway and handle 70 million passengers a year.

The airport, which is extending its current runway, now has nine million passengers a year.

The Airports Commission will decide by December if Birmingham's proposal will go on a shortlist for further consideration, along with expansions of Heathrow or a new London airport.

The third one must make the Emirates plane feel at home as its wake kicks up clouds of dust from the desert-like runway extension site (please note that the WIND direction is left to right).

Strong crosswind - aborted landing and missed approach

These are two Flybe flights 3 minutes apart which were forced to abort landing and "go around" at BHX on 16 April 2013 due to a vicious crosswind (strictly, the second [Embraer 195] should probably be called a missed approach as it may not have touched down). Both landed safely a little later.

The gusts were so strong that at times I had to hold the camera tripod to stop it blowing over!
The Dash-8 pilot reported to ATC a "sink gap" due to the turbulence, causing the plane to float over the runway then suddenly bang down onto it.
Shortly after these landings the operating runway was switched from 15 to 33.

Three missed approaches at Birmingham Airport (BHX)

All in a days work for these pilots, as they chose to abort the landing procedure before touching down, and to "go around" and try again - which they all did without problem on second attempt.
The first two happened on days with quite strong crosswinds, the third on a rainy day with some gusts.

These are all scheduled passenger flights, and the planes are: KLM 737-700, Ryanair 737-800 and Monarch A321.

The missed approach ("aborted landing" if touchdown has occurred) doesn't happen very often but is a well-practised and safe process, including climbing back into airspace which is kept clear for just this possibility.

Whip crack sound from 737 wake turbulence

By flugsnug
Published on 22 Mar 2013

Whip cracking sounds have sometimes been reported from the turbulent wake following landing planes. I've heard some very weird sounds from the wake, but this is the one and only time I've actually experienced the whip crack, which is at 0:45 in the video. The recording doesn't really do it justice - I nearly jumped out of my boots it was so loud and sudden!

If you look carefully before the whip crack you can see a visible effect of the wake as a horizontal line passing downwards through the horizon at 0:39 and visible for over 3 seconds. Also you can see the camera shake after the crack as the wash hits it (the movement at 0:51 is me panning slightly).

For geeksters the video finishes with a repeated recording of the whip crack and a display of the sound spectrum of the entire recording.

The plane is a Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-800 landing runway 33 at Birmingham Airport (BHX). The conditions were: wind calm, temperature +5C, dew point +3C, barometric pressure (QNH) 990hPa
