Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup - Birmingham 2016 from Dave Vickers on Vimeo.

Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup, golf’s largest and most exciting tournament took place at Belfry Golf Club in Birmingham, United Kingdom on Thursday 19th May 2016. Mr. Selim Ozturk, General Manager Birmingham presented the winner Award to Naeem Arif. The Belfry is one of the best known resorts in Great Britain and has played host to the Ryder Cup – the spirited contest between professional golfers of the U.S. and Europe. The Belfry has played host to four Ryder Cup events – in 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002 – the most out of any course in the world.

Mr. Ozturk congratulated everyone who took part in the Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup in Birmingham said; “We are incredibly proud to be hosting the latest 2016 Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup qualifier, here at the Belfry, one of the greatest golf courses in the country.

Turkish Airlines believes in the power of sport to bring people together, inspire fans around the world and encourage people to travel. Turkish Airlines as a brand, will always look to sport as a source of inspiration. This is evident in the airline’s sponsorship of international sporting events including Euro 2016, European Professional Club Rugby and of course the Turkish Airlines Open golf tournament we are all here for.”

From 31st May 2016 Turkish Airlines will increase its services between Birmingham and Istanbul from 13 flights a week to double daily, offering more than 300 extra seats a week from the Midlands.

Double daily flights give passengers greater choice and flexibility, which is particularly beneficial for business travellers. It also means that customers have greater access to Turkish Airlines’ extensive route network from Istanbul to 283 destinations around the world.

The airline has a successful story to tell. Starting with five services to Istanbul in December 2008, Turkish Airlines soon realised the strong demand in the Birmingham region and increased the number of flights in January 2012 to seven weekly departures. Later that year it increased to ten departures per week and in December 2014 the Airport welcomed news that the programme would grow to 12 weekly flights.

Selim Ozturk, General Manager for Birmingham, Turkish Airlines, said, “Birmingham Airport is a hugely successful base for us and we have grown significantly over the past eight years. The double daily flights gives passengers even more choice and with 283 onward destinations via Istanbul throughout the Middle East, the Far East and Africa, Birmingham Airport really is the gateway to the world with our award winning airline.”

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive, Birmingham Airport, added, “Turkish Airlines is a fantastic carrier and partner to have here at Birmingham Airport. Starting eight years ago the service has gone from strength to strength carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers. The Turkish Airlines in-flight product is award winning and extremely popular – which is demonstrated by more and more people choosing to experience the service, reliability and affordability it offers.

“I congratulate the Turkish Airlines team on doing a great job here in the region and increasing passenger numbers year-on-year, and for further committing to Birmingham Airport.”

Shakespeare's Airport

Visitors Receive Warm Regional Welcome Into Shakespeare's Airport
8th March 2016

A warm Shakespeare welcome will be given to passengers arriving at Birmingham Airport, following the unveiling of a new installation to greet the millions of visitors arriving into the region through ‘Shakespeare’s Airport’ each year.

In partnership with destination management organisation, Shakespeare’s England, the new artwork is located in the arrivals pier of the terminal building.

It gives visitors a taste of what the region can offer, showcasing the range of wonderful tourist attractions including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Kenilworth Castle, Warwick Castle, Leamington Spa, Bicester Village and Shakespeare's Family Houses – which have all supported the campaign.

Back row (from left to right): Helen Peters (CEO of Shakespeare’s England), Geoff Spooner (Chairman of Shakespeare’s England) and Paul Kehoe (CEO of Birmingham Airport).

Front row (from left to right): Emmeline Foster, Mollie Taylor and David Jackson all actresses and actors from Shakespeare Aloud!

This is just one of a number of exhibitions and events which the Shakespeare's England region is coordinating in the region to celebrate 400 years of William Shakespeare’s legacy. 2016 commemorates 400 years since the death of the world famous playwright and this special anniversary year is a unique opportunity to visit his home of Stratford-upon-Avon and the surrounding area.

The welcome will be in place throughout 2016 and has been made possible thanks to support from the Royal Shakespeare Company, Kenilworth Castle, Warwick Castle, Warwick District Council, Bicester Village and Shakespeare's Family Houses.

Geoff Spooner, Chairman of Shakespeare’s England and General Manager of Warwick Castle, said, “With over 10m passengers passing through Birmingham Airport every year, this is a fantastic opportunity for Shakespeare’s England to showcase some of the world class visitor attractions that its members provide and which are enjoyed by millions of visitors every year.

“This presence will generate increased awareness of Shakespeare’s England and with it, help to promote the equally impressive range of restaurants, theatre, overnight accommodation and many other attractions in this outstanding region.”

Birmingham Airport markets itself as Shakespeare’s Airport overseas, particularly in China and the US where so many people study and love The Bard’s work.

Jo Lloyd, Commercial Director for Birmingham Airport and Deputy Chair of Shakespeare’s England, said, “Birmingham Airport is proud to be Shakespeare’s Airport, which is proving to be very successful with overseas markets. This welcome not only cements our branding but also allows our passengers to feel involved in The Bard’s anniversary celebrations from the minute they arrive.”

Guests from the region’s business and tourism community were invited to a special event at the airport today (8th March) to witness the unveiling, and were treated to a special live performance from Shakespeare’s Aloud! actors from the Shakespeare's Family Houses.

Birmingham Airport Welcomes Czech Airlines
25th April 2016

Birmingham Airport has welcomed another new airline, with the arrival of the Czech Republic’s flag carrier, Czech Airlines.

(Left) David Vitasek, Area Sales Director for Czech Airlines and (right) William Pearson, Aviation Development Director for Birmingham Airport, are pictured with the crew of the Inaugural Czech Airlines Birmingham-Prague flight.

The airline has launched five times weekly services to Prague and offers a strong network of connections through Eastern Europe.

The Airbus A319 aircraft, with business and economy cabins, was welcomed with a traditional water arch salute from the Airport’s fire service on its arrival into Birmingham.

William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s Aviation Development Director, said: “We are delighted to welcome Czech Airlines as a new partner, serving Prague five times a week. This direct route, which was unserved from Birmingham Airport, gives passengers the chance to visit this picturesque city, known as The City of a Hundred Spires, for either business or leisure at very reasonable prices.”

Steeped in history, Prague offers tourists a wide range of things to see and do; from exploring the old town and strolling over Charles Bridge by day, or taking in the views of the stunning Gothic cathedral at night. The streets are bustling with traders and entertainment and there are plenty of bars and restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

Commenting on the new Birmingham service, Ján Tóth, Czech Airlines Director of Commerce and Marketing, said: “I am glad that Czech Airlines is returning to Birmingham to connect it directly with Prague after more than 15 years. The Birmingham – Prague service is one of the eleven new routes we have prepared for 2016 summer season. We strongly believe that a direct connection between the both cities will significantly contribute to the growth of tourism between the West Midlands and Czech capital and vice versa. I would like to use the opportunity to thank the airport in Birmingham for their excellent work on the preparation of the launch of our new route."

The Airbus A319 aircraft has a total of 144 seats in full economy configuration or 12 business and 126 economy class. The schedule is as follows:

Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays: arrive into Birmingham 1700 and depart Birmingham 1740. Thursdays: arrive into Birmingham at 1850 and depart at 1930
Sundays: arrive into Birmingham at 2000 and depart at 2040

Qatar Airways Starts Service From Birmingham With Eight Weekly Boeing 787 Dreamliner Flights To Doha

Qatar Airways today inaugurated the airline’s fourth United Kingdom (U.K.) gateway, with direct flights between Doha and Birmingham connecting the city with more than 150 destinations worldwide.

The inaugural flight touched down at sunrise on 30 March and was greeted by a traditional water salute witnessed by a crowd of gathered media while Qatar Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer Dr. Hugh Dunleavy, who travelled on board the inaugural flight with U.K. Ambassador to Qatar, Mr. Ajay Sharma, was greeted at the arrival gate by Birmingham Airport’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Paul Kehoe.

The addition of Birmingham marks the fourth U.K. gateway for Qatar Airways after London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh, with the eight weekly services operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker said: “We are delighted to commence services to Birmingham, our fourth U.K. gateway. This vibrant and economically powerful region represents an important addition to our worldwide network and is a testament to our commitment to the U.K. Passengers now have access to more than 150 global destinations, accessed via 73 flights per week from the U.K., facilitated by smooth transfers through our home and hub, Hamad International Airport.”

Qatar Airways now operates 73 flights per week to the U.K., with 42 flights per week to London Heathrow, 16 to Manchester, seven to Edinburgh and eight to Birmingham, from its state-of-the-art hub, Hamad International Airport.

Hamad International Airport offers 40,000 square metres of combined retail, food and beverage facilities, establishing the airport as a premier shopping and dining destination. With more than 70 retail outlets offering an unprecedented selection of designer labels, high street fashion, electronics and gourmet foods, the airport also features an airside hotel, complete with swimming pool, squash courts and spa.

The British Ambassador to Qatar, His Excellency Mr. Ajay Sharma said: “I was delighted to be able to travel on the inaugural flight from Doha to Birmingham. The launch of this new route will open up further opportunities for both Qatar and the U.K. Just like Doha, Birmingham and the surrounding area is host to a number of investment projects and tourist destinations that will appeal to investors and visitors. I am certain that this route will successfully enhance the partnership between our two countries.”

Birmingham Airport Chief Executive Officer, Paul Kehoe said: “We are extremely excited to be welcoming Qatar Airways to Birmingham Airport. Connecting the economically vibrant West Midlands region with the rapidly developing capital city of Doha will be hugely beneficial to passengers at both ends of the route. Additionally, the large selection of onward connections on Qatar’s network gives our long-haul travellers access to more of the most popular destinations around the world from Birmingham.”

A recent survey of 1,000 people from Birmingham and the surrounding region commissioned by Qatar Airways in the United Kingdom showed that 65 per cent of respondents would be more likely to use a local West Midlands airport if it had better long-haul connections.

The results clearly show that travellers in the West Midlands are keen to fly from a local airport if it offers a choice of long-haul destinations to rival those available elsewhere. With eight flights a week, including two flights on Saturdays – the equivalent of over 2,000 seats – Qatar Airways passengers travelling from Birmingham will have access to the world’s most exciting destinations, all within one convenient and seamless transfer at the airline’s state-of-the-art hub, Hamad International Airport.

The Birmingham route is operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner in a two-cabin configuration, comprising of 22 seats in Business Class and 232 Economy Class seats. All seats include individual television screens, with Economy Class customers benefitting from a screen 10.6 inches wide, offering the latest inflight entertainment comprised of up to 3,000 options, complimented by the airline’s award-winning service.

Every seat has direct aisle access in Business Class, where passengers can catch up on sleep in a fully-flat bed or make productive use of their time utilising the large work surface area. Passengers can also stay connected while travelling with the option of Wi-Fi which is available throughout the aircraft.

Qatar Airways’ home, Hamad International Airport, houses one of the world’s largest and most luxurious Business Class lounges – the Al Mourjan Business Lounge.

Connections between countries such as Pakistan and Australia from Birmingham have never been easier thanks to Qatar Airways. In Pakistan, the airline serves seven destinations including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Peshawar and Islamabad. From 2nd March the airline commenced a new service to Sydney, Australia and from 2nd May Adelaide will also complement the existing Perth and Melbourne services.
